General FAQ Related To Turnitin

How To Conduct A Literature Review Using Google Scholar Step By Step Guide

A free academic search engine known as Google Scholar (GS) is sometimes referred to as the academic counterpart of Google. Instead of searching all of the online content that has been indexed, it searches publisher repositories, academic databases, or scholarly websites.

Typically, a smaller portion of the pool gets searched by Google in this manner. Even though everything is done automatically, the majority of search results come from trustworthy academic sources. In contrast to highly moderated subscription-based academic databases like Scopus and Web of Science, Google is also less selective about what it includes in search results, therefore it is important to determine the authority of the sources linked through Google Scholar on your own.

When conducting thorough searches, such as systematic reviews, Google Scholar (and Web of Science) shouldn’t be used as a stand-alone resource for locating evidence and finding: Title searches rather than full-text searches in Google Scholar get much more results for ancient literature.

When you are going to complete a literature review, it’s essential to collect research information from many domains and eras, and google scholar is helpful in that regard.

Now, there are a few different reasons why I prefer using Google Scholar while conducting a literature review study.

The first is that Google does a reasonably good job of discovering all of the relevant work that is available online and indexing journals, conference papers, and research databases.

Read:

The second is that Google provides us with a few useful tools that we may use to browse the literature and find new information as we search.

Read:

In order to show you how to use Google Scholar, allow me to give you an example. Consider that our literature review is looking for information on social eye observation in robotics.

Step By Step Guide of using Google Scholar for Literature search

Step 1: Type “Google Scholar” into the search bar and click and find the google scholar dashboard

Note: The first thing to keep in mind is that you may type “google scholar” in the search field and use the same Google tactics as you would when conducting a regular Google search.

Step 2: Now you can search any topic of your interest on the search bar of google scholar For example, you can Search Fish farming by typing the word in the search bar and clicking the enter button.

Note: Add the word(s) in question to the search tab and press Enter to look for the exact phrase. And it’s clear that Google provides us with a lengthy list of results with the same outcomes. Additionally, it provides us with the paper’s title, the authors who wrote it (although it can be difficult to see on other platforms), where it was published, and the year (see above screenshot) So feel free to click on any of these sites immediately and find the articles details.

Despite these details, Google Scholar Dashboard will also indicate on the right-hand side of this page whether the article is directly available as a PDF (see above screenshot). If so, it will also let you know which website is hosting the PDF. This is due to the fact that PDFs aren’t always hosted by the journal or conference that published the work; instead, writers may upload the PDFs on their own personal pages, for instance.

If you want to find older works that may have been published a little while ago as well as more recent publications that really show the recent R&D in the field of the subject selected.

Step 3: Google scholar allows us to search for articles based on their publication date and years and if you wish to restrict our search, you can search articles starting in the year (as shown below ) 2022, we will only see paper those that have been released in the selected years and this aids in limiting the scope to the most recent work.

As shown above, we are obtaining all 2022 academic research papers (shown in the above screenshot) that have been published in that particular field, complete with source information If you wish to look for research within specific timeframes, you may also build a custom range of your search.

Now, if you read the references in a certain paper, you can locate pertinent articles that were released earlier than that paper. But google scholar offers us a convenient way to locate publications citation and cite scores (see inside the red circle in below screenshot)

Note: If you are enjoying a specific research article and also wanted to see whether there was any additional research that was interested in it and had cited the publication. To view a list of publications that have mentioned the article we are most interested in, click the “cited by” (as shown in the red circle of below screenshot) link and see results and use these papers for your literature review.

Step 4: Google Scholar also offers the ability to automatically generate references, and you can easily obtain several citation types or styles by simply checking the cite button and finding the results as displayed below screenshot.

As mentioned above, you can find references for citations in several citation formats. To use them, just copy and paste the references into your written document’s references area.

Read:

You can see that you may acquire the citations in a variety of different standardized formats by clicking the cite link that is located beneath each article as shown in the picture above.

In fact, if you read down to the bottom, you may also find the citation in BibTeX style (see in the red circle below screenshot) a text format that you can copy and paste directly into your bib file, which is particularly useful for students studying computer science field.

You can also use one more useful feature of Google Scholar is the ability to conduct a fresh Google search inside the articles that are quoting the article we’re most interested in by selecting “search within citing articles” from the drop-down menu. And by doing so, you can significantly hone in on your area of interest.

Step 5: Google scholar dashboard also provides us with the beneficial feature of occasionally being able to click on individual author names to access that author’s research profile.

As an illustration, by clicking on my name (Koshal Kumar) here, you can find a Google Scholar profile which I set up with a picture of myself and my affiliation and citation I received till date (see below red circle) and Google automatically indexes all of the articles online that are published by me.

In this way, you can find the literature you want, and google scholar is also automatically ordered by how frequently they have been cited, but you can manually sort by recency by clicking the year or by author name and titles of the paper. Additionally, it might occasionally be helpful to research recent works by a particular author while building your literature review, and finally, Google provides us with a convenient way to cite, allowing us to determine how to cite specific articles.

I do recommend checking the citation over, because oftentimes Google automatically generates it, and there may be some weirdness or errors in the way it has handled the title or the journal-title. So that was a whirlwind tour of how to use Google Scholar to do a literature review.

This is all about this article, and we sincerely hope that these steps and advice of using google scholar in the literature review will be useful to you as you are going to search for literature review online in your journey of research and you are familiar with the online literature review process. What Is A Literature Review And Types Of Literature Review

If you are looking to understand the concept of literature review and the types of literature review.

You’ve come to the right place because this article describes the details of a literature review as well as the top ten types of literature reviews used in research.

After completing this article and these steps, it is clear that you can understand the process of literature review in research and its use in your research with care.

If you are having difficulty writing your research paper, please send us a sample email. We are here to help you.

The purpose of this article is to provide information about literature reviews and the types of literature reviews.

When writing an undergraduate dissertation, master’s dissertation, doctoral thesis, or simply a research paper, the initial duty may be to learn about different types of literature reviews.

A literature review is a search and assessment of the body of knowledge in the form of printed documents on the subject or area of interest that you have selected. It provides information about the most recent developments in the area you are writing about.

A literature review demonstrates to your audience that you have a thorough understanding of the issue in hand and that you are aware of how your own research contributes to the body of existing knowledge.

Read: Few steps in literature review writing

It’s crucial to remember that while writing a literature review, this third layer of knowledge is frequently regarded as “true” despite if it frequently only has a tenuous connection to primary and secondary literature reviews.

Given this, there are several techniques for writing literature reviews based on the sort of analysis supporting your study, even though they are intended to provide an overview and synthesis of relevant sources you have examined and on the basis of the design of the study there are many types of literature reviews.

In this article, we will discuss the typical sorts of literature reviews that are used in research and point out any gaps in your topic’s knowledge.

Top 10 types of literature review

1. Argumentative Review

This method selectively studies the literature to prove or disprove a claim, a deeply held presumption, or a philosophical conundrum that has already been established in the literature. The goal is to create a body of writing that promotes an opposing viewpoint.

Given the value-laden nature of some social scientific studies, such as immigration control and educational reform, argumentative techniques to literature analysis can be a valid and significant type of discourse.

However, keep in mind that when they are utilized to make generalizations of the sort, they might likewise cause issues with bias.

2. General Literature Review

General literature review that offers an overview of the most crucial and relevant facets of the state of the field’s knowledge. The study objective, underlying hypothesis, or problem, as well as the reviewer’s argumentative thesis, must be stated in the general literature review, which serves as the opening to a thesis or dissertation.

Unlike a critical review, which examines a narrowly focused clinical topic of interest to sports medicine doctors, a general review reviews a topic of broad interest to clinician-researchers or sports medicine clinicians.

3. Historical Review

Historical literature reviews look at the research over time, frequently starting with the first time a problem, idea, theory, or phenomenon appeared in the literature and following its development within a discipline’s scholarly community.

The goal is to put research in historical perspective in order to demonstrate familiarity with cutting-edge advancements and to determine the most likely pathways for future study and for the few things that exist without reference to earlier events in history.

4. Integrative Review

Reviewing, critiquing, and synthesizing representative literature on a subject in an integrated manner is seen as a type of research that produces fresh frameworks and viewpoints. All research addressing the same or similar hypotheses is included in the body of literature. In terms of clarity, rigor, and replication, a well-done integrative review adheres to the same requirements as primary research.

5. Methodological Review

The methodological literature includes a description of the study techniques and designs, these methodological reviews present the advantages and disadvantages of the employed techniques and offer suggestions for the future.

The method of analysis used in a review is more important than the actual content of what was said. This method allows researchers to draw on a wide variety of knowledge ranging from the conceptual level to practical documents for use in fieldwork in the areas of ontological and epistemological consideration, quantitative and qualitative integration, sampling, interviewing, data collection, and data analysis techniques.

It also provides a framework of understanding at different levels (i.e. those of theory, substantive fields, research approaches, and data collection and analysis techniques).

6. Scoping review

Scoping Reviews are becoming more common in a variety of academic fields since they are useful for locating the body of previous research on a particular research subject.

They define knowledge gaps and clarify concepts in the literature. Contrary to systematic reviews, “scoping reviews aim to provide an overview or map of the evidence, rather than to generate a critically assessed and synthesized result/answer to a specific topic.”

However, scoping reviews are “systematic-like” and necessitate a meticulous methodology. They frequently have a process, the searching is methodical and fairly thorough, and the methods are well-documented. They might come before a thorough systematic review.

7. Systematic Review

A systematic review is a summary of the medical literature that uses explicit and repeatable processes to systematically seek, critically evaluate, and synthesize a certain topic. It uses techniques to lessen biases and random mistakes to combine the findings of numerous primary research that are related to one another.

In order to support decision-making and identify best practices, seeks to systematically find, evaluate, and synthesize research findings. Often depends on the type of study, which may involve studies of effectiveness, qualitative research, economic evaluation, prevalence, etiology, or the precision of diagnostic tests, and can take a variety of approaches.

This form includes a summary of the available research that is relevant to a clearly stated research question, as well as data collection, reporting, and analysis from the studies that are part of the review. The research is identified and critically evaluated using pre-specified and standardized methods.

8. Rapid Review

In comparison to traditional systematic reviews, rapid reviews are a type of evidence synthesis that may offer more current information for decision-making.

Rapid reviews can be carried out in a variety of ways and are often completed in less than five weeks or are often completed in less than five weeks and employ a wide range of methodologies. Often, decision-makers have a limited amount of time, therefore it is impractical to synthesize the information via a systematic review.

By skipping parts of the systematic review that make it less rigorous, a quick review shortens the procedure and speeds it up.

9. Theoretical Review

A theoretical literature study that looks at how theory influences or frames research. This form’s objective is to study the body of thought that has developed in relation to a certain problem, idea, theory, or phenomenon.

The theoretical literature review aids in the development of new testable hypotheses by identifying what theories already exist, their connections, and the extent of their investigation.

This format is frequently used to demonstrate that there are no suitable theories or that existing theories are insufficient to account for a novel or developing research issues. An entire theory or framework, a single theoretical concept, or another unit of study may be the focus.

10. Traditional Review

A Traditional or narrative literature review is a thorough, critical, and unbiased analysis of the most recent research on a subject. They are a key aspect of the research process and aid in developing the theoretical underpinnings, emphasis, and context of your study.

A literature study will assist you in finding patterns and trends in the literature, which will enable you to spot any gaps or contradictions in a body of information. You should then have a sufficiently specific research topic that supports your study as a result.

In this way Writing A Literature Review Paper is defined as a summary of the earlier written research works on a certain area or subject and it is a systematic process of writing all these previous information in a structured way and can be used to describe an entire academic paper or a specific piece of academic work, like a book or an essay.

For Example: if your research paper describes an experiment on the mental health of research students, you will likely need to know about the work done earlier and a summary of earlier studies on this topic, and this kind of literature or published documents are often referred to as a literature review.

1. Search for relevant literature on your topic

In this context, literature just means any academic sources like books or journal articles relevant you’re your topic of research. First, you need to search in the right scholarly databases, so something like Google Scholar, JSTOR, and science direct. Search by putting your title and the title itself should indicate what we are searching, you can search your keywords with boolean operators which help you filter and refine the search results and explain how what we are getting from this search

2. Evaluate and select source of information for literature

Unless your topic is super niche, you probably can’t read everything that’s been written on the topic. Once you’ve got the sources from the relevant literature Search, read the abstract to scan whether an article is relevant or not, and also scan the references section to find other relevant sources of literature. You should also pay attention to the citation count on Google Scholar. If the count is high, the source is probably important and you should include it and come with an abstract just like a trailer of a movie from where you can get the whole analysis of the work

  • Chronological, that means from older to more recent publications.
  • Thematic, so organized around several key themes.
  • Methodologically, you can compare the different research methods being used across studies.
  • Theoretical to discuss opposing theories or models.

And finally, get ready for writing a literature Reviewer structure!

Make sure that your literature review structure has an introduction, the main body that summarizes and synthesizes the sources, and a conclusion, similar to other academic texts.

Important Purpose of Literature Review in Research

A Literature Review in Research is intended to help readers understand the current research and discussions that are pertinent to a particular subject or field of study and to communicate that understanding in the form of a written report.

The primary goal of a literature review is to write a paper that involves summarising recent advancements in a specific topic and the knowledge on the issue is summarised in the report. The reader’s understanding of the topic is improved by discussing the results presented in recent research publications.

Describe how each piece relates to the other works being considered and find fresh angles for interpreting earlier works. Identify any gaps in the available research and reconcile apparent contradictions in prior studies.

Some Important Purposes of Literature Review in Research

purposes number one,

Literature review is for you to validate that you have a compact understanding of the literature, the research, and your research questions. So your research is going to be on a topic and the starting point for your discussion is to show that whatever your research question is, whatever the aim of your research is, you need to prove that you know what has already been done. So that’s the really first step and maybe it’s the most important function.

Purpose number two,

The second reason for a literature review, is for you, to form the basis of literature to show that there is a research gap. To show that there is a need for your specific research.

If you’re doing a master’s are you doing Ph.D. research regardless of the level that you’re at there’s some requirement for originality. Generally, universities don’t want you to research something that’s been done a million times.

So what the literature review serves to do is for you to go and do the work and to figure out where are the gaps in the literature, where are the gaps in the research, how can I take a unique angle and something new that’s not been done before, how can I take a unique angle in terms of context or terms of a specific country a specific environment, etc.

The second function of your literature review and you are just reviewing the literature the actual act of reviewing it is for you to establish that clear need for your research.

Purpose number three

Now, the third function is not necessarily relevant to everyone. Still, for those of you who are planning to build a theoretical model or conceptual model, the conceptual framework of the literature review is the basis of that.

What you would then be doing is taking the various theories and the various pieces of research that have been undertaken in the past and building some sort of conceptual model that you would then go on to test and validate. Perhaps not relevant to everyone but that is an important function if you are doing any sort of quantitative validation testing etc.

Purpose number four

The point is that a very important function of the literature review is for you to get some inspiration, to get some insights, and perhaps even some useful practical tools and takeaways to inform your methodology.

So those are the four important functions of the literature review and the first two are really what you need to keep in mind during the literature survey. It’s only a critical recap of what has already been researched on a topic, so no need to panic.

Conclusion

It is concluded that the importance of A Literature Review Paper in Research is as follows:

  • It provides us with a piece of background information on the subject and the topic of research.
  • It also helps to determine areas of existing study to avoid duplication and to properly credit other scholars.
  • It helps to recognize contradictions, such as gaps in the literature, inconsistencies between studies, and unanswered questions from other studies.
  • It helps to justify your research and research outputs with the previous research and helps to formulate a new research question
  • It also determines the connection between the research works done and their impact on the subject and other works carried out.
  • It also put your own findings in the context of the existing literature and argues why more research is necessary for the same in the future.

This is all about this article, and we sincerely hope that the purpose, information, advice, and ideas we’ve provided will be useful to you as you are going to write a review paper in your journey of research and you are familiar with the literature review paper writing. You are in trouble if you don’t know what this word means, however, do not bother.

We are here to explain the meaning of the term, the importance of research publications using it, and how it is used in research.

It means “Digital Object Identifier,” also known as “permanent links,” provides a permanent web address (URL) as well as numbers, letters, and symbols used for the unbalanced identification of articles or documents.

It is the constant position and identity of a published research article and never changes. You can simply search for this particular paper by using this Digital Object Identifier number.

It is used for a variety of academic and non-academic sources online, like citation, referencing, etc.

Example of Digital Object Identifier

Some examples can be expressed as an alphanumeric sequence of numbers or as a web page as follows

URL: DOI:10.1080/15588742.2015.1017687

http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/15588742.2015.1017687

https://doi.org/10.51220/jmr.v16i3.1

See below for the detailed explanation of the different sections or parts of a DOI number.

Note: The above description is based on the data from the Crossref database.

There are generally three different ways or formats used in research.

  1. http://dx.doi.org
  2. DOI: xxxx or DOI: XXXX
  3. https://doi.org/xxxx

What information should a DOI contain?

It is a digital object identifier that indicates exactly what its name means and identifies digital objects or the only way you can trace your published article using the DOI finder by title.

It is particularly common for scientific and academic journals, but there are many other types of documents, such as research reports, presentations, data files, records, official or state publications, chapters, audio or video articles, etc.

It is utilized for a wide variety of recognized papers and materials, including software, photography, and performance.

It may also be assigned to one publication level, so a DOI may be associated with another DOI with specific issues at that stage or the table of articles.

The Digital Object Identifier of all objects is ambiguous and cannot be determined.

It is interpreted as an internet location taken by the object. Accessing an object or object metadata to identify a user for an object This means that it can be found above the object.

All DOIs are permanent, and even if the object or object metadata is moved and a web page or Uniform Resource Locator exists, the same object is identified and changed. If the metadata associated with the DOI is up to date, it will generate a stable identifier rather than a URL.

Because it is available elsewhere, a free version is being developed. The free version of the found object and the free version of the paper behind the paywall are for design purposes. The reader can be read.

The International DOI Foundation operates many Digital Object Identifier registries that are responsible for DOIS and provide services to those seeking to obtain a DOI name and descriptor.

There are no specific characters in it but all Digital Object Identifiers are slanted forward, separated by prefixes and suffixes. A suffix is assigned and starts with 10 digits. It identifies strings as part of the DOI namespace.

He enters a period (or period) followed by 4 or more digits (possibly appended to additional stops) to identify the registrant. This is usually the sender or the sender of the digital object.

Suffixes, on the other hand, can be customized with numbers and symbols of the registrant’s choice and often include the ability to identify a specific entity associated with that ISSN or ISBN and DOI.

According to the International DOI Foundation, the DOI should be in the format of this journal article Example – DOI: 10.1015/S03656690001786.

Crossref, one of the most well-known Digital Object Identifiers registrars, offers entire URLs in the same format, and it is advised.

http://doi.org/10.1015/ S03656690001786. Reliably and permanently redirect users to the correct web address with a persistent URL (or PURL).

The number of research journal articles can usually be found on the journal website along with the front page of the article or other article metadata, and it is often the source of scholarships and academic publications.

Importance of DOI for Researchers

  1. It guarantees that researchers have accurate metrics for how to use or mention their output.
  2. Improve data sharing and reuse by making information discoverable over the long term.
  3. It add credibility to the source, so it’s important to use them when available. The inclusion of a DOI in a citation means that the source is unique and substantive.
  4. Assist in citation tracking, ensuring that a researcher has reliable data on how and where their research outputs are used or referred to.
